Primary school “ Moša Pijade ” in Dimitrovgradu
In 1869 in Czaribrod the first school was founded in the old premises of Cvetan Ivanov's pub in Strošena češma (Broken Spring). The founding of the school came after the visit of Dragan Cvetkov , who was the assistant of the Valia in Niš.

First school building
It was founded in the autumn of 1869 and the first teacher was Živko Ropopski. Moreover, a great part in spreading literateness among the locals in indebted to the monasteries of ‘ St. Demetrius ' and ‘Poganovo'.
The school building of the central school in Dimitrovgrad was opened in 1954 and it is a representative edifice as well as a landmark of the town. Earlier, almost every village had a school. It has been recorded that there were 36 school buildings. Today, there are only five separated classes in the villages of Željuša, Lukavica, Gradinje, Smilovci and Trnski Odorovci .
In 1964, a gymnasium, as well as some other educational premises were attached to the building. A kitchen and dining room for pupils was erected in 1978. In 1984, a teaching media library came into operation, as a part of the pupil's union, which was founded in 1957. Furthermore, a dentist's surgery started working in 1988. In 1997, the school was equipped with a modern informatics classroom. The school library boasts a collection of 29 000 books in Serbian, Bulgarian and English, as well as a great number of scientific literature. It is a quiet corner modernized in 2003, equipped with computers, TV sets, as well as other audio-visual media, which enable higher quality and more modern approach to current trends in education. Furthermore, the library hosts special forms of teaching, seminars and school festivities.
‘ Moša Pijade ' primary school has initiated ‘Meetings of Republic of Serbia 's Nations and Nationalities' Primary Schools' which were traditionally held for several decades. The Meetings took place in Dimitrovgrad for the last time in 1994.
The pupils achieve enviable results in competitions of all levels (in chemistry, mathematics, languages, literature, sport). The results are attained as a result of quality and professional work of teachers who attending seminars attain new knowledge and ways of presenting it. The motto of the school which has been accepted by the school development plan is: SCHOOL=THE JOY OF LEARNING AND FRIENDSHIP. ‘Moša Pijade' primary school is one of the few schools which foster its image – it has its own logo and anthem. The school takes special care of young talents. As a result of the work with children who like writing, and in cooperation with ‘Detko Petrov' library four compilations of their works were published; school art section often organizes exhibitions of its members' best works; young pupils - actors are members of amateur theatre ‘Hristo Botev' and play important roles in the organization of various cultural festivities.
The school nurtures good relations with cultural and educational institutions in both Serbia and Bulgaria , fostering the traditions and cultures of both peoples.
Today, the primary school in Dimitrovgrad has 853 pupils attended to by 63 members of education staff.
